Ask any dentist in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, or just about anywhere else, and they’ll tell you that there are few things in the world which are worse for your teeth than hard candy. Sugar candy is delicious, but while it melts in your mouth it’s also melting your teeth. That’s why we so strongly encourage our patients – young and old – to find alternatives.
As it turns out, some of those alternatives can actually help fight tooth decay! Certain substances used as sweeteners or flavorings in candy are legitimately good for your mouth. As such, these are two types of candy our Rancho Cucamonga dentists and team can heartily recommend.
Two Options in Sugar-Free Candy That Can Fight Cavities
1 – Xylitol
Xylitol is a nonfermentable sugar alcohol, which basically means it tastes sweet but doesn’t turn into a source of energy like plant sugar. Multiple studies have concluded that no oral bacteria can manage to process it, which means it cannot contribute to tooth decay. Some studies have even suggested it may encourage the regrowth of dental enamel, which would make it an anti-cavity substance similar to fluoride. However, research has yielded conflicting results on that point.
Either way, Xylitol-based candy or gum will definitely not contribute to tooth decay and might also help undo existing damage. However, don’t overdo it. Excessive consumption (several grams a day) can cause gastrointestinal issues like flatulence or loose bowels.
2 – Licorice / Cavibloc
Natural licorice root is another substance which has been shown to inhibit tooth decay thanks to a chemical called glycyrrhizin. However, we are not talking about standard licorice candy. Licorice candy is still filled with sugar since natural licorice is only mildly sweet. That said, some people find it enjoyable to simply chew on licorice roots.
For those who want something more like candy, there’s at least one product on the market named Loloz, which has created a proprietary formulation of licorice root they call Cavibloc. These are lollipops full of the cavity-fighting glycyrrhizin but also have more standard artificial sweeteners. A couple of these lollipops every day can be downright good for your teeth, and they taste great too!
